News & Announcements
2009- 2011
The trafficking and use of illegal narcotics on Rainy River First Nations has become a growing concern for our community. Members have asked the leadership to take action to put an end to drug trafficking and to address the widespread use of illegal drug use.
A community meeting took place in the fall of 2008 at the roundhouse to discuss the illegal drug problem within our community. At this meeting members reiterated the need for action to put an end to the use and trafficking of illegal drugs. As a response, a drug task force was formed consisting of community members and representatives from Treaty Three Police Service and the medical profession.
The drug task force has consulted with Fisher River First Nation and has used their By-Law to Prohibit Illegal Drugs as well as their Illegal Drug Policy for Employees as a model for Rainy River First Nations to adopt. Fisher River First Nation has had this By-Law and Drug Policy in place for several years and has noticed significant results in the decrease in illegal drug use and trafficking.
I would like to invite the community to an information session to discuss Rainy River First Nations implementing a By-Law to Prohibit Illegal Drugs and an illegal Drug Policy for Employees. A representative from Fisher River First Nation will be present to assist in answering questions.
The community information session will take place on September 16, 2009 at 5:30pm at the gymnasium. There will be a community supper then a presentation of the proposed By-Law and Drug Policy.
